L'opera tratta dello sviluppo di un nuovo metodo di design aerodinamico preliminare per la valutazione della stabilità direzionale dei velivoli ed è incentrata sulla classe turboelica regionale per la sua rilevante posizione nel mercato del trasporto aereo. L'argomento della stabilità direzionale è stato scelto a causa delle notevoli differenze che i metodi semi-empirici classici, come USAF DATCOM ed ESDU, forniscono per alcune configurazioni di velivoli, essendo questi metodi basati sui risultati dei test in galleria del vento, eseguiti nella prima metà del secolo scorso, su modelli non rappresentativi di un attuale aeroplano da trasporto. Sono state eseguite numerose simulazioni CFD per calcolare l'interferenza aerodinamica tra le parti del velivolo per centinaia di configurazioni. Inoltre, una campagna di prove sperimentali in galleria del vento ha validato l'approccio numerico. Il modello sperimentale è stato realizzato in modo da misurare direttamente anche la forza aerodinamica agente sul piano verticale. I risultati delle simulazioni numeriche e dei test in galleria del vento sono congruenti.
